CONNECT THROUGH WORSHIP AT MAIN STREET

A church with a history in the community and a heart for the future.

This morning I was reading my devotion from the Center for Action and Contemplation. It happens that the theme for this year with them is based on Matthew’s gospel and Jesus’ words from the Sermon on the Mount. “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16

In this morning’s devotion, we are reminded that Jesus tells us, “You are the salt of the earth.” He does not say we will be, or we should be, or we will become the salt of the earth. We are told we are the salt of the earth. Salt was a precious commodity. Here is how spiritual writer Debbie Thomas talks about us being salt. “Salt at its best sustains and enriches life. It pours itself out with discretion so that God’s kingdom might be known on the earth—a kingdom of spice and zest, a kingdom of health and wholeness, a kingdom of varied depth, flavor, and complexity.”

This year at Main Street UMC we will focus on how we are salt and light for our community. Please join us on this journey of creating a Kingdom of salt and light.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Rich

Join us each Sunday as we celebrate God and glorify his name in praise

Here are some opportunities to be involved in our worship.

Ushers
Ushers greet and provide bulletins to worshipers as they arrive each Sunday and assist them in finding a seat. They assist worshipers with hearing devices, large-print hymnals, and related needs which make the worship experience meaningful. Ushers also collect the offering during the worship services.

Greeters
Greeters are stationed at the main entrance to the Atrium and Narthex. They extend a warm welcome and provide directions as necessary.

Worship Planning Team
The Worship Planning Team coordinates the work of all of the ministries listed in this section and works with the pastor to plan worship.

Acolytes
At the 11:00 am service acolytes bring in the cross and light the altar candles at the beginning of worship an extinguish them at the close of worship. One of our young acolytes in training carries a Bible to the altar.

Altar Guild
Members of the Altar Guild see that the sanctuary is ready for worship each Sunday.

Worship Leaders
Those in this ministry may be asked to lead worship by making announcements, reading scripture and leading a prayer during worship. Lay Readers are needed for the 8:30 and 11:00 am services.

Decorating Committee
This group decorates the sanctuary for special occasions of the church year, including Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Palm Sunday and Easter.

Photographers
Photographers are needed to take pictures of new members when they join the church as well as other events in the life of the church.

Technology Team
Audio and video operators are needed each week to run the sound board and other equipment that may be needed during the 8:30 and 11:00 am services.
